Major mobile phone companies have agreed on one standard charger. It will be more efficient and environment friendly than the models used now.
We’ll see a standardised mobile phone charger by 2012, the GSMA association, which represents the interests of the industry worldwide, said on Tuesday.
Orange, Telefonica, Vodafone, 3, AT&T, Mobilkom Austria, T-Mobile, Telenor Telstra, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG and Sony Ericsson agreed on a one-fits-all charger on Saturday.
The new charger will use the mini-USB interface and is promised to be up to 50% more energy efficient then the current models. It will also produce less waste, the GSMA spokesman Rob Conway said.
The decision follows increasing pressure from the European regulators, who wanted to see a universal charger for mobile phones. Marco Caputo, an Italian member of the European parliament, said the standard must now become compulsory. |
