In a bizarre incident that nearly ended in disaster, a 50-year-old British man with almost total vision loss managed to drive nearly 241 kilometers on a highway in England, despite having no driver's license and being under the influence of alcohol.
The incident began in the early hours of the morning when a police patrol on the M6 motorway near Carlisle noticed an Opel Meriva moving erratically and swerving suspiciously between lanes. Upon stopping the car, officers were surprised to find that the driver was drunk, had no license or insurance, and was almost blind.
Drove the car after drinking four bottles of liquor
During the court hearing, Anthony Hall pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a license or insurance, and using his partner's car without her consent.
His lawyer explained that his client was going through difficult personal circumstances, including emotional problems and financial pressures, which prompted him to try to escape his reality by heading to Scotland. However, this did not explain his decision to drive despite his medical condition and alcohol consumption.
According to Hall's statements, he made the decision to take the trip after drinking four bottles of liquor with his partner. Although he had never obtained a driver's license in his life, he used to work in the automotive industry, which gave him practical knowledge of driving. Furthermore, losing most of his eyesight two years ago did not stop him from getting behind the wheel.
Relied on truck lights to navigate the highway
The police report indicated that Hall stopped at a petrol station during his journey to refuel and received help from the staff there, without anyone reporting his condition or noticing the danger of his situation.
When asked how he managed to drive the car all this distance at night, he explained that he was still able to see lights faintly, so he stayed behind a large truck, following its taillights.
However, this method did not help him maintain a steady course, as police spotted his car swerving between traffic lanes and sometimes even heading toward the shoulder of the road, making the journey extremely dangerous for his life and the lives of others.
Suspended prison sentence and rehabilitation program
Although the incident ended without an accident, Hall did not escape punishment; the court sentenced him to 36 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months.
He was also ordered to abstain from alcohol for 90 days and enroll in a rehabilitation program, concluding an incident that sparked astonishment due to the combination of drunk driving, lack of a license, and almost total blindness.
