In an extraordinary human story, an American couple in their 90s survived one of the most dangerous experiences of their lives after a violent car crash caused a rare injury that nearly killed the wife. Together, they managed to write a new chapter in their lives following an unexpected survival for both.
Gary and Martha Ramer, who have spent more than seven decades together, were on their way to visit a family member in Casa Grande, Arizona, when the accident suddenly occurred.
According to Gary, his foot slipped while driving, and he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes. The car veered off the road and crashed violently, totaling the vehicle and injuring the couple.
Rare car crash injury puts wife's life on the line
Following the crash, it was revealed that both suffered cervical spine injuries due to the force of the impact, but 91-year-old Martha's condition was the most critical.
Rescue teams urgently transported Martha to the hospital, where doctors discovered she had suffered a rare condition known as "internal decapitation." This injury occurs when the ligaments connecting the skull to the spine are torn, while the surrounding muscles remain intact.
This type of injury is considered highly dangerous, with doctors confirming that a large percentage of those who suffer it do not survive.
Difficult initial diagnosis and unexpected survival
Despite her critical health condition, Martha's story was not over.
While one doctor suggested moving to hospice care—a specific type of palliative care provided in the final weeks or months of a patient's life—another medical evaluation revealed that she had the ability to move large parts of her body, giving the medical team a reason to continue treatment.
This change in assessment was a turning point, marking the beginning of a long journey of recovery and rehabilitation for the couple.
After 15 days of treatment and rehabilitation, the couple's condition began to improve. They emphasized that overcoming this ordeal was the result of determination, medical support, and holding onto hope.
Before leaving the rehabilitation center, the couple performed a special song for their medical team, which they had written before their marriage, in an emotional moment expressing their gratitude to those who stood by them.
The recovery journey is still ongoing, as the couple currently resides in an assisted living facility, but their biggest dream is to return home again.
Their story remains more than just a tale of survival; it is a testament to the strength of a relationship that has lasted for over 70 years, and the human capacity to face the hardest moments when holding onto hope.
